1) Hello Dark Forest, our readers are not very familiar with this name, why don’t you introduce yourself, you as a band, your origin, your carreer path?
Hello, yeah the band was first formed back in 2002 in the West Midlands, England. We've always played heavy metal in our own particular style, which some people have called traditional NWOBHM, some called it power metal and some even folk. I suppose we do combine a certain amount of all those elements, some more than others but we just call it heavy metal and leave the categorizing to others. We started playing the same way most bands do, just doing the local pub circuits, then we began to get gigs on the underground metal scene. We've been gradually building up in this way over the last few years and have had a few releases out in the meantime.
2) Your first album came out after a demo, Succumbus, as well as two EPS published in 2007, whose titles were, respectively, Fear Dearg and Phantoms of the Sea.
What was the mood in which you set up the Dark Forest? What will you tell us about the making of the full length?
The debut album was recorded in June 2008 and released by 'Eyes Like Snow' in January 2009. It was basically a collection of all the old songs that had appeared on the previous EPs, with the inclusion of a couple of brand new songs. We had just lost our original bassist before going into the studio and had already been offered the album release deal so that was a big blow to us. Luckily we knew someone who was willing to join the band in replacement and who was able to learn the songs very quickly. So Bill appeared as bassist on that album and I think he definitely put his own personal stamp on the songs with the bass lines he wrote. However, we had very limited studio time. We recorded the whole thing in three days so it was quite a frantic, rushed affair.
3) As far as I have noticed, you cannot hide a passionate love, let me use the word “passionate”, for the NWOBHM movement.
At the end of the gig held at An Cruiscin Lan, in Cork, I couldn’t help framing you in the sentence from Saxon’s Denim and Leather: “Where were you in '79 when the dam began to burst”.
Have you ever been concerned that people might think of you in terms of a band who actually likes playing with their “being nostalgic” of the past?
Well we see ourselves as a modern band, not a retro or nostalgic band. We obviously have a lot of influences from that NWOBHM era but we take those influences and use them to create our own thing. We don't go for things like analogue recordings because it just seems a bit pretentious seeing as it's 2011. Having said that we also hate the kind of over produced, clinical, digital sounding recordings that a lot of modern bands go for, which takes all human aspect out of the music and may as well be made by a computer. We're proud to carry on flying the flag for British Metal, and we're very aware of the history behind us, but it makes it all the more important to bring this type of music into the present day, because if all the young bands that are influenced by NWOBHM only try and immitate that era, then it will just die in the end. It's very difficult to play traditional heavy metal in a modern way I suppose, without ruining it, but we don't think too much about it, we just play what sounds good to us. When we're on stage, the passion comes from the music we've created, not so much the memory of what went before. We're aware that some people do see us as a nostalgic throwback band, but I don't think they're listening to the music properly. If they listened to us without any preconceived ideas, they'd hear that we're playing a fresh take on traditional heavy metal.
4) Are you still happy in relation to your previous work or, two years later, do u ever find some mistakes in it that you wouldn’t have noticed before?
Haha well like I say, the first album was very rushed and didn't come out much the way we wanted at all. If we could do it again the entire production would be different, especially the guitar tones! But what's done is done, a lot of people seem to enjoy it all the same, but I think to experience those old songs in full you need to see them played live!
5) In 2009 a new EP called Defender was released. What about it, how did it come out?
Yes that was when we gained our first real frontman Will. We'd been looking for a vocalist for years while I took the role myself in the meantime. When he joined we decided that we needed to release something that would act as an introduction to the new line up. We recorded a short, three track EP with 'Iron Kodex' which, as well as the title track 'Defender', included a little instrumental 'I Vow to Thee, My Country' based on the music by Gustav Holst and also a re-recording of 'The Wizard of Alderley Edge' which originally appeared on the debut album.
6) What is usually the origin of one of Dark Forest’s songs?
Our songs very often come about from experiencing an atmosphere. If there's a certain atmosphere you pick up on, say going for walk through the woods at twilight or standing in the ruins of an old fortress for example, that can inspire all sorts of ideas and thoughts and feelings. Then you can try to capture that and turn it into musical form. So i'll start writing music which, when I hear it, reminds me of that original atmosphere. Then it's a case of writing lyrics which also fit the mood of the song. I'd say that when writing songs, there's very little inspiration involved that actually comes from other music.
7) What are the main themes or topics for your songs and who writes the lyrics?
I've written nearly all the lyrics and music to date, but Will has also written lyrics for a few songs on the upcoming second album. The first album was almost completely a collection of folklore. Some of the stories were nearly forgotten local tales which we took and gave new life, others dealt with well known subjects like Arthurian legend. This sort of thing has been a big source of inspiration for the band, as well as historical events but we've also been delving into a variety of themes recently with the new material. Some of the lyrical themes on the second album include time travel and alien abduction and with even newer material i've been writing, there's lyrics about life after death and reincarnation. There's all sorts of subject matter we can look into in future, but I think there'll still always be a place for folklore and mythology in Dark Forest as well.
8) Which are the CDs that you consider most important for you and those which have most influence on your sound?
Well my personal favourites include the Iron Maiden albums, The Number of the Beast, Somewhere in Time and Brave New World. Also Deep Purple - In Rock and Black Sabbath - Master of Reality. Though i'm not sure how much they actually influence our sound. I suppose Iron Maiden have the biggest impact on us musically. There's other albums which I think you can hear have influenced us like the first Elvenking album, Heathenreel and also various Blind Guardian albums.
9) Now, just referring back to the live night in An Cruiscin Lan where you performed as the main band, how do you think the gig was?
That was a really fun gig, it was our first night in Ireland and there seemed to be a good vibe coming back from the people in the audience. It was great to be able to play over there at last, we specifically performed 'Fear Dearg' there which is a creature from Irish folklore, although I don't think many people knew anything about it haha! All the feedback after the gig was great though, we just hope to play there again in future!
10) What will the future bring to the Dark Forest?
We're currently in talks with a label to release our second album 'Riders to the Stars'. We're hoping for it to be out later in the year. Also there's talk of a Defender re-release at some point and we'll be finally getting Dark Forest t shirts done as well. Other than that we'll carry on playing as often as we can, carry on writing new songs and keep flying the flag!

1)Salve Dark Forest il vostro nome non è molto conosciuto dai nostri visitatori, che ne dite di riassumere la nascita e il cammino della vostra band?
Ciao a tutti, allora, la band si è formata nel 2002 nelle West Midlands, in Inghilterra. Abbiamo sempre suonato heavy metal nel nostro stile particolare, quello che alcuni hanno definito come NWOBHM tradizionale, altri come power metal, e altri ancora persino come folk. Penso che mescoliamo una certa dose di tutti questi elementi, alcuni in misura maggiore di altri, ma noi lo chiamiamo semplicemente heavy metal e lasciamo che gli altri lo collochino in una categoria. Abbiamo cominciato a suonare come la maggior parte delle bande fanno, entrando nel circuito dei pub, poi abbiamo cominciato con qualche concerto nella scena del metal underground. Così abbiamo cominciato gradualmente ad accumulare esperienza nel corso degli ultimi anni e nel frattempo abbiamo pubblicato qualcosa.
2)Il vostro primo album, intitolato Dark Forest, è stato composto dopo aver pubblicato un demo,Succubus, e due ep usciti entrambi nel 2007 intitolati:Fear Dearg e Phantoms Of The Sea.
Quale è stato lo spirito che vi ha portato a comporre Dark Forest? Potete parlarci della produzione del full lenght?
L'album con cui abbiamo debuttato è stato registrato nel giugno del 2008 e pubblicato nel gennaio 2009 sa "Eyes Like Snow". Sostanzialmente si trattava di una collezione di pezzi vecchi che erano già presenti nell'EP precedente, con l'inclusione di un paio di pezzi completamente nuovi. Avevamo perso il nostro primo bassista proprio poco prima di entrare in studio e ci era già stato offerto un accordo per la pubblicazione dell'album, è stato quindi un grande colpo per noi. Fortunatamente abbiamo incontrato qualcuno che aveva la voglia di entrare nella band come sostituzione, così come l'abilità di imparare molto velocemente i pezzi. Bill divenne con quell'album il nostro bassista e penso che abbia decisamente messo la sua impronta personale sulle canzoni con le parti di basso che lui stesso scrisse. Comunque passammo poco tempo nello studio. Registrammo tutto in tre giorni, tutto in fretta e furia, un lavoro affrettato.
3)Da quanto ascoltato sicuramente non nascondete un amore, permettetemi di dire viscerale, per tutto quel movimento che fu la NWOBHM.
Alla fine del concerto che avete tenuto al Cruscin Lan ho sicuramente inquadrato la vostra band con una frase dei Saxon tratta da Denim and Leather: “Where were you in '79 when the dam began to burst”
Questo non vi preoccupa in quanto la gente può definirvi dei ragazzi che giocano a fare i nostalgici?
Bé, ci vediamo come una band moderna, non retro e neppure nostalgica. Ovviamente prendiamo molti spunti dall'era NWOBHM ma li usiamo per creare cose nuove. Non andiamo alla ricerca di analogie perché sarebbe troppo pretenzioso considerando che siamo nel 2011. Abbiamo anche anche detto che odiamo quelle pubblicazioni già proposte migliaia di volte, fredde e dal suono troppo digitale per la quale molte delle band moderne optano, poichè toglie dalla musica l'aspetto umano tanto che potrebbe anche esser stata fatta da un computer. Siamo fieri di portare in alto la bandiera per il British Metal, conosciamo la storia che ci ha preceduto, ma cioè rende più importante il fatto di portare questo tipo di musica nei giorni nostri, perché se tutte le band emergenti che sono influenzate dalla NWOBHM la imitassero semplicemente, sarebbe la fine di essa. Quando siamo sul palco, la passione vien fuori proprio dalla musica che noi abbiamo creato, non tanto dalla memoria di quella che è venuta prima. Sappiamo che alcuni ci vedono come una band nostalgicamente impiantata nel passato, ma pensiamo che non ascoltino la nostra musica dome si dovrebbe. Se ci ascoltassero senza alcun preconcetto, si accorgerebbero che facciamo musica fresca sulla base dell'heavy metal tradizionale.
4)Siete ancora abbastanza soddisfatti del lavoro che avete effettuato oppure a distanza di due anni riascoltando Dark Forest avete scoperto dei difetti che prima non avete notato?
Ahah, bè come ho detto, il primo album è stato fatto in tutta fretta e non è venuto proprio come avremmo voluto. Se lo potessimo fare tutto da capo, tutta la produzione sarebbe diversa, soprattutto l'accordatura della chitarra! Però quel che è fatto è fatto, molti ci dicono che lo hanno gradito ugualmente, ma penso che per poter davvero apprezzare in pieno quei vecchi pezzi bisognerebbe sentirli dal vivo!
5) Nel 2009 pubblicato un nuovo ep intitolato Defender. Cosa potete dirci a riguardo la sua realizzazione?
Si, è stato quando abbiamo guadagnato il nostro vero rappresentante Will. Stavamo cercando un cantante da tanto tempo e io nel frattempo occupavo quel ruolo. Quando lui entrò nella band decidemmo che avremmo dovuto pubblicare qualcosa in modo da marcare la nuova svolta. Registrammo un EP breve, di appena tre tracce con "Iron Kodex"che, così come la canzone che dà il titolo "Defender", includeva una breve traccia strumentale "I Vow to Thee, My Country", ispirata alla musica di Gustav Holst, e in più un rifacimento di "The Wizard of Alderley Edge" originariamente presente nell'album del debutto.
6)Come nasce una canzone dei Dark Forest?
Le nostre canzoni spesso nascono da una atmosfera vissuta. Se c'è una determinata atmosfera da cui puoi prendere qualcosa, ad esempio camminare nella foresta al crepuscolo o trovarsi fra le rovine di una vecchia fortezza, questa può ispirarti ogni sorta d' idea, di pensiero o di sentimento. Quindi puoi cercare di catturarlo e trasformarlo in musica. E così che comincio a scrivere una musica che, al momento di ascoltarla, mi riconduce all'atmosfera che l'ha originata. Poi è il momento di scrivere delle parole che stiano bene con la musica. Direi proprio che nella composizione vera e propria delle canzoni, c'è ben poco che provenga dall'ispirazione di altra musica.
7)Quali sono i temi che affrontate nei vostri componimenti, chi si occupa della stesura dei testi?
Fino ad ora ho scritto io quasi tutta la musica e i testi, ma Will ha anche composto testi per alcune delle canzoni che usciranno col secondo album. Il primo album è stato quasi completamente una collezione di folklore. Alcune delle storie provenivano da favole locali quasi totalmente dimenticate che abbiamo ripreso e fatto risuscitare a nuova vita, altre avevano a che fare con le ben conosciute leggende Arturiane. Queste cose sono state una grande risorsa di ispirazione per la band, così come gli eventi storici, ma ci siamo anche avventurati in una varietà di temi attraverso il nuovo materiale . Alcuni temi dei testi del secondo album includono viaggi nel tempo e rapimenti di alieni e, con il nuovo materiale che ho scritto, si trovano anche testi sulla vita dopo la morte e la reincarnazione. Ci sono tutti i tipi di temi su cui possiamo rifletterci in futuro, ma penso ci sia comunque e ancora spazio per il folk e la mitologia nei Dark Forest.
8)Quali sono i cd a cui vi sentite maggiormente legati che hanno contribuito alla creazione del vostro sound?
Personalmente, i miei preferiti includono gli album degli Iron Maiden, The Number of the Beast, Somewhere in Time e Brave new World. Anche i Deep Purple, In Rock e Master of Reality dei Black Sabbath. Nonostante ciò, non sono certo su quanto effettivamente abbiano influenzato il nostro sound. Penso che gli Iron Maiden abbiano un maggiore impatto su di noi, musicalmente parlando. Ci sono altri album che ritengo si possa sentire l'influenza su di noi, quali il primo degli Elvenking, altri degli Heathenreel e vari dei Bling Guardian.
9)Ritornando allo show che avete svolto al Cruscin Lan, come giudicate la serata che vi ha visto come gruppo principale?
Quello è stato davvero un concerto divertente, la nostra prima serata in Irlanda e sembrava ci fosse una bella sensazione che proveniva dal pubblico. Finalmente è stato bello poter suonare lì, in particolare abbiamo suonato "Fear Dearg" che è una creature del folk irlandese, nonostante credo molte persone non ne abbiano mai sentito parlare ahah! Comunque i feedback sul concerto son stati positivi, però vorremmo ritornarci a suonare in futuro!
10)Quali è il futuro che attende i Dark Forest?
Attualmente stiamo in trattative con una Label per la pubblicazione del nostro secondo album "Riders to the Star". Speriamo di farlo uscire nel corso di questo anno. Inoltre si sta parlando si ripubblicare Defender prima o poi e finalmente presto avremo disponibili le magliette dei Dark Forest. A parte ciò, continueremo a suonare il più possibile, continueremo a scrivere nuovi pezzi e manterremo alta la bandiera!
