"Se noi falliremo, non sarà colpa degli altri, ma nostra. E 'già successo che abbiamo incasinato le cose, ma era un casino accettabile. C'è sempre qualcosa di nuovo da imparare." (Michael Wachelhofer).
E questi sono I Cornerstone, , band proveniente dalle lontane (per me che sono pugliese è assai lontana) lande austriache. L’Austria, terra famosa per aver dato natali illustri a musica nobile, quale la musica Classica con quel gran pezzo di talento che risponde al nome di Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (tanto per citarne uno a caso, tra l’altro mio divo). Paese, altresì’, noto per il mitico gulasch, le lumache utilizzate nelle pietanze più stravaganti, lo strudel di mele o, ancora, il "gefilte Fisch" (pesce ripieno), modello per l'apprezzata galantina di carpa servita nei locali gourmet austriaci.
Beh, se sapete cosa volete mangiare e come volete mangiare, sappiate che in Austria si mangia bene.
Ma, soprattutto c’è sempre spazio per ottima musica. Musica proveniente dai territori metropolitani, quelli dell’Underground firmato Rock N’ Growl, sinonimo di garanzia per noi di The Empty Dream. La musica dei Cornerstone e del loro “Somewhere in America” che ci propone un “Piatto” a base di Hard Rock, AOR ben miscelato con del pop che, al sottoscritto, garba moltissimo.
Se ci aggiungiamo che al microfono c’è una signora “Lady” singer, tale Miss Patricia Hillinger, ugola d’oro che dona quel fascino in più ad ogni composizione del brano si capisce sin dall’opener, “Stay”, un bel macigno di rock sorretto da un ottimo guitar riffing e da bellissime melodie che si stamperanno nella mente dell’ascoltatore, che siano tra le mani di vecchi lupi di mare.
Già, perché i Cornerstone non sono alla loro prima pubblicazione (che comunque, stando a ciò che dice la stampa, fu davvero un gran bel successo e che porta il nome di “Head Over Hills”) ma al loro secondo disco. Disco in cui la band “aggiorna” la line up proprio con l’innesto di Patricia, gran bella ragazza e, soprattutto, forza portante della musica della band. Una musica che non può non lasciare incantato l’ascoltatore che ci propone una tripletta iniziale davvero micidiale: la già citata “Stay”, la successiva high light “Rise And Shine” nella quale è possibile udire il maestoso lavoro delle chitarre, dei cori e del micidiale assolo finale ad opera di Steve Wachelhofer (membro fondatore della band austriaca che, con questa seconda song, ci fa’ capire immediatamente la ragione di quel “Somewhere in America”: loro vogliono sfondare, vogliono tirar fuori tutta la loro energia per incanalarla nei loro strumenti e nelle loro corde vocali, per poter urlare al mondo: “Noi ci siamo e vi facciamo un culo così!”.
E questo è possibile udirlo anche nella pacata “Breathing For You”, dove l’AOR domina incontrastato, dove le corde vocali di Patricia incanteranno noi ascoltatori così come fecero le sirene con Ulisse, mandandoci in estasi. Ottima track, ottima prova della band. Un brano che ci propone un break in cui la band poi esplode e fa’ terminare il brano in una sorta di accelerazione improvvisa.
Roba da rocker a stelle e strisce con tanto di gioielli di famiglia sotto.
Ma l’incanto deve ancora avvenire e, questo, porta il nome della struggente ballad “Right Or Worng”, nella quale Patricia da’ il meglio di sé, mostrando a tutti la sua stupenda voce. Una ballad pianistica, nella quale, le chitarre, udibili solo in sottofondo, saranno “coperte” dalle tastiere suonate da l’ennesimo estro musicale, tale Mr. MichaelWachelhofer, che, oltretutto, si occupa della sezione ritmica (basso) e dei backing vocals che, nel finale, donano un fascino ancora maggiore, se non superlativo, ad una song che, di per sé, era già nata come una perla.
Meravigliosa.
Si prosegue con “Like A Stranger”, ennesima hit del lotto in cui si pesta più duro, senza snaturare il sound dell’album tutto e rimanendo fedele al songwriting. Brano in cui l’hard rock melodico, l’AOR e il pop si fondono alla perfezione. Roba da far perdere i capelli a vecchie volpi americane sperdute “da qualche parte in America” che tentano ancora, invano, di riciclare il loro nome e le loro vecchie hit.
Ma noi ci godiamo i Cornerstone che non finiscono di stupire con un brano come “Follow You Follow Me”, laddove a dettar legge è una bellissima chitarra acustica ed i suoi arpeggi che ci riportano un po’ in mente un certo senso di folk e country rock. Altro piccolo gioiello targato Cornerstone.
E si prosegue, con brani all’insegna della dinamicità estrema, qual è il bellissimo e melodico “Being Unaware”, fottuto rock stradaiolo come non ascoltavo da tempi immemori. Rock che mi fa’ sciogliere letteralmente, dal quale trapela l’ottimo gusto della band nel saper miscelare le melodie e tessere note sul pentagramma tale da partorire piccoli capolavori i cui refrains vi ritroverete a canticchiare sotto la doccia. Inutile dire che il bello è tutto concentrato nella parte finale davvero scoppiettante ed esplosiva, tutta “made in Cornerstone”.
“Oblivius” è l’ennesima dimostrazione di come si possa fare hard rock senza scadere in ritornelli sdolcinati e fini a sé stessi, mentre la successiva “Hig And Low” è la conferma dell’ottimo stato di grazia dei Cornerstone, una band in cui la sezione ritmica non sbaglia un colpo, in cui l’amore per l’hard rock a stelle e strisce esplode tutto, in cui le melodie sono il fulcro delle composizioni, in cui le chitarre ci faranno letteralmente sbavare con i loro giutar solos.
Insomma: il brano perfetto?
Difficile a dirsi, dato che siamo al cospetto di una prova davvero maiuscola, all’interno della quale accade davvero di tutto e scegliere il brano più bello equivale ad un crimine.
Mentre, a chiudere in bellezza le danze ci pensa la stupenda “Strut”, ballad acustica, in cui il basso di Michael scandirà attimo per attimo ogni nota del brano, accompagnando in perfetta armonia le chitarre che sapranno ben sciorinarsi tra momenti più clean ad episodi lievemente distorti. Il tutto, ovviamente, con la stupenda collaborazione della nostra singer preferita, Patricia, che anche qui non finirà di stupirci ancora.
Le danze terminano qui. L’album pure.
Ma la musica, quella, è destinata a restare in eterno.
Un plauso a tutti, dalla produzione, alla band, alla distribuzione e a coloro che decideranno di sostenere questi giovani ragazzi che, ancora una volta, hanno dimostrato come una band Underground possa spaccare il culo in 4 ad altre band più blasonate e leccate dalla stampa e dal music business.
Auguro il meglio a questa band che ha ben saputo intrattenermi e emozionarmi. E lo faccio con un voto che, credo, non disdegneranno…

I apologize to the band and anyone who read this review if it has committed more than a translation error.

And these are the Cornerstone, bands from distant (for me as it is very far from Puglia) Austrian lands. Austria, a land famous for having given birth to illustrious uplifting music as classical music with this great piece of talent by the name of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (to name just a coincidence that, among other things, my star). Country, also 'known for the legendary goulash, the snails used in the most extravagant meals, apple strudel, or even the "gefilte Fisch" (fish filling), the popular model for jellied carp served in local gourmet Austrian .
Well, if you know what you eat and how you want to eat, know that you can eat well in Austria.
But, above all, there's always room for good music. Music coming from the metropolitan areas, those signed the Underground Rock N 'Growl, a guarantee for us at The Empty Dream. The music of Cornerstone and their "Somewhere in America," which we propose a "plate" made of Hard Rock, AOR well mixed with the pop, like a lot to the undersigned.
If we add that the microphone is a lady "Lady" singer, that Miss Patricia Hillinger, golden voice that gives it appeal more to the composition of each song you ever , from opener understand, "Stay", a beautiful stone supported by an excellent rock guitar riffing and beautiful melodies that will print in the mind of which are in the hands of old sea dogs.
Yeah, because Cornerstone is not their first publication (which, however, according to what the press says, was truly a great success and that bears the name of "Head Over Hills"), but their second album. Disk where the band "update" the line up precisely with the addition of Patricia, much beautiful girl and, above all, the driving force behind the band's music. Music that can not leave the listener spellbound that offers a truly original triple killer: the aforementioned "Stay", the subsequent high light "Rise And Shine" in which you can hear the majestic work of guitars, the choirs and the deadly final solo by Steve Wachelhofer (founding member of the Austrian band that, with this second song, it makes us' see immediately the reason for that "Somewhere in America": they want to break, they want to bring out all their energy to channel their instruments and their vocal chords to scream to the world: "We are and we will make an ass like that!"
And that you can hear it in quiet "Breathing For You", which dominates the AOR, where the vocal cords by Patricia enchant listeners as we did with Ulysses the sirens, sending us into a trance. Great track, very good test of the band. A song that gives us a break when the band then it explodes and 'finish the song in a sort of sudden acceleration.

But the magic is yet to come, and it bears the name of the poignant ballad "Right Or Worng" in which Patricia from 'the best of himself, showing everyone his wonderful voice. A piano ballad, in which the guitars, only audible in the background, will be "covered" by the keyboards played by yet another musical genius, that Mr. Michael Wachelhofer, which, moreover, deals with the rhythm section (bass) and backing vocals that, in the end, give a charm even greater, if not superlative, a song that, in itself, was founded as a pearl.
Wonderful.
This is followed by "Like A Stranger," yet another hit of the lot where it crushes the hardest, without distorting the sound of the album all and staying true to songwriting. Piece in which the hard melodic rock, AOR and pop the blend to perfection. Stuff to lose hair in old American foxes lost 'somewhere in America", which are still trying, in vain, to recycle their name and their old hits.
But we enjoy the Cornerstone that do not stop to amaze you with a song like "Follow You Follow Me", where those laws and a beautiful acoustic guitar and his arpeggios that bring us a little 'in mind a sense of folk and country rock. Another little gem Cornerstone weblog.
And it continues with songs dedicated to the extreme dynamism, which is the beautiful and melodic "Being Unaware", you fucking street rock as not listening since time immemorial. Rock makes me 'literally melt from which transpires in the great taste of the band know how to mix and weave the melodies on the staff notes that bear little masterpieces whose refrains you'll find yourself humming in the shower. Needless to say that beauty is all concentrated in the final part really crackling and explosive, all "made in Cornerstone."
"Oblivius" is yet another demonstration of how you can do without falling into hard rock tunes and sentimental ends in themselves, and the following "Hig And Low" is the confirmation of the state of grace of Cornerstone, a band in which the rhythm section did not miss a shot, in which love for hard rock stars and stripes explode all, where the melodies are at the heart of the compositions, in which the guitars we will literally drooling with their giutar solos.
In short: the perfect song?
Hard to tell, since we are really testing the presence of a capital letter, in which case just about anything and choose the most beautiful song is tantamount to a crime.
While, to finish off the amazing dances thinks "Strut", acoustic ballad, in which Michael will mark down moment by moment, each note of the song, accompanying the guitars in perfect harmony that will clean the most well show between episodic slightly distorted. All this, of course, with the wonderful cooperation of our favorite singer, Patricia, who will not end even here to surprise us again.
The dance ends there. The album as well.
But the music, that is destined to remain forever.
A praise to all, from production, the band, distribution, and those who choose to support these young guys, once again, showed how a band can split the Underground 4 other bands ass licking and more famous by the press and from the music business.
I wish the best this band has been able to converse well and move me. I do so with a vote, I believe, did not hesitate ...
